Provision 3 (ANA)| Code of Ethics for Nurses With Interpretive Statements
The nurse promotes, advocates for, and strives to protect the health, safety, and rights of the patient.
As an example, the patient has the right to make a decision regarding all aspects of care. In order to make a decision, the nurse must provide all information necessary so that the patient can choose. The nurse must not force her personal beliefs on the patient for any reason.
During the fall and winter months, the Flu Vaccine is widely promoted in hopes of increasing vaccine compliance rates each year. In some facilities it is a performance measure. However the patient has the right to refuse for any reason as long as the nurse has provided the patient education.
